A few years ago with my at-the-time 7yo:
SON: So-and-So at school said his parent's are Santa.
ME: Oh?
SON: I said that's impossible, there's no way his parents are rich enough to buy presents for all the kids in the world.
ME: You're very wise
My father was a sharecropper for part of my childhood. My mother worked hard, helped him as much as she could, and raised me with almost no money, and mostly on the food we could grow ourselves and hand-me-downs from cousins. When I was still very little and questioned the inequality of gifting my mother told me that Santa was very fair with presents but that many of the kids from richer families actually got gifts from their parents. She told me that their expensive presents were marked "From: Santa" when it was actually something their parents bought. But, she cautioned me not to tell anyone because all kids should believe that Santa was kind and generous. She also told me that the most important thing was that children knew they were loved and some of those children with more gifts, were not loved as much as I was, so I should be kind to them and never jealous of their plenty.
