This is pretty much how it went down for me when I was younger. We were watching the Simpsons episode where Homer befriends a gay man and starts to worry Bart might grow up to be gay. I didn't understand what anyone in the episode was talking about, so I asked my parents. Luckily, my mom and dad are awesome and pretty much explained it as "Well, you know how most of the time men and women fall in love with each other? Well, sometimes there are men who fall in love with other men and women who fall in love with other women."
That was it. It made perfect sense to me. I said "Oh." and went back to eating my dinner. It was not. A big. Deal.
