I think my parents probably stopped doing this when my room became a hazard to navigate and my bed was as far from the door as humanly possible. I do this for my son still but he's only a year and 1/2 so I still have those "ARE YOU STILL ALIVE AND BREATHING? OH GOD" moments. Guess they won't go away any time soon. =p

I do this whenever I wake up at night (I have 3 kids). And if they're not making any sound, I poke them till they do.
